I want to

What do you want to do?

I found myself this morning thinking “I want to lose a few more pounds”.

The realization that I had was this, Wanting doesn’t get it done.

It is pretty rare to hear someone state that they want something that they already have.  It implies some sort of change.  Something is in the way.

When the want is motivating enough to actually do something about it, it is useful.

Unless you are motivated by your wants enough to do something about them, it is no different than the insanity of finding your dreams by winning the lottery.

Wanting to win the lottery doesn’t help you win the lottery.  You have to buy more tickets.  (but at that point, the desire isn’t to win the lottery, it is to have a windfall of cash, and buying more tickets probably isn’t the best thing if you are really motivated by the cash.  Buy tickets if you want to enjoy the dream of winning for a few days until the drawing more than you will enjoy having the cash in your pocket later)

“I know what I’m doing”

“I’ve been doing this a long time, I know what I’m doing.”

Do you?  Do you really?

Just because you have been doing it a long time doesn’t mean you know what you are doing.  It doesn’t mean that you’ve selected the right success metrics and have modified your behavior toward improving them.

Many people believe that the company that I’ve helped create has been successful.  That being said, I go in to everything I do with the willingness to learn, look at results and make changes, because “I don’t know what I’m doing.”
